She Walks in Beauty

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.
One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express,
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.
And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

It was with great sadness that we learnt the demise of Aunty Nada. We will always remember her as a cheerful person, who made everyone around her happy with her smile. She was a delight to be around.
We have known Uncle and Aunty Nada from our childhood years in Colombo. Aunty was a very loving person, always ready to help anyone in whatever way possible. She has been very dear to our family. Even after migrating to the US in 2009, she would visit Sri Lanka every year to see her friends and family. She always loved coming to Sri Lanka on holiday. That was the love and affection she had for her friends and family. Although she was feeble to travel, she had the loving support of her children and their families, who accompanied her to Sri Lanka almost every year.
We will cherish Aunty’s ever smiling face and her kind and loving words.
She will be missed dearly.
May her soul rest in peace.

She was one of the most kind and lovable ladies we have ever met in our lives so far. Her charming pretty smile and soft-spoken quality will never be forgotten. We have been still using her great cooking tips on making delicious Sri Lankan curries. Even though she lived miles away from us, she and her motherly advice is greatly missed by our family too.

Dear Aunty Joyce
Recently I came across this beautiful poem where it says life is like a journey on a train ....with its never ending stations.....surprise route changes...... and unexpected accidents!
The train is so long that it has so many cabins full of people of all ages, experiences, different talents, expectations etc. Each one of us board the train at a specific station called 'at birth'. Different people always board and step down at each station too. In general Thenuka and I have had a pleasurable journey so far. That pleasure increased after we realized you were in the same cabin with us about 20 years ago. We shared laughs, good casual talks, tasty food and comforted each other. Among all others in that cabin you had an infectious smile and a grace that is rare and a kindness only limited to the best of the best. It was heartbreaking to realize that you got off at the last station! I wish that I were able to stop you leaving us!
But the funny thing is no body knows at what station each has to step down and we cannot stop the train either. When is our turn? When is our time?
We will dearly cherish all the memories that you’ve left with us until we reach our station. No one knows for sure where we go after we step down. We hope we will meet again though.
Until then may we wish you a wonderful continuing journey.

She was a second mother to me and I called her Amma (mother, in Tamil). Her heart was big and filled with unconditional love, her words were kind, soothing and instantly calming, and when she smiled her eyes smiled too. I was blessed to have Amma in my life and she continues to dwell in my heart even though I won’t be hearing her sweet voice again. Rest In Peace Amma, in Lord’s embrace.

Aunty Joyce an admirable and unforgettable idol.
When we first moved to Albany New York in April 2016 we were not sure how our resettlement process was going to be as it was big change to us in terms of all aspects of our life.
An unexpected warmth welcome and comfort was first extended by Naren and Amithi who introduced us to the wider Sri Lankan community in the capital region.
Our first introduction to Aunt Joyce was a unique experience in many aspects and provided a family and homely feeling. It helped us comfortably settle down in this area. Since then, we met her often enough to share stories of each other’s life and inspire each other’s background and paths. Her smile and hearty hospitable reception and greetings made us visit her frequently and enjoy every moment of her company.
Our children found a new Ammamma (Grandma) who has always been an inspiration to them. She asks and listen attentively about their studies, wellbeing and future plans. She had an extraordinary memory and brought past events to relate to people in the contexts of the discussion to allow us to understand the situations and made a huge impact in our decisions.
As most of the Sri Lankans here, we also enjoyed her traditional dishes and shared our experiences. Her traditional food and humble soul added to her welcoming presence.
Her loss will be an irreplaceable one to her family and the wider community who lost a friend and one of the most admirable person in our lives. She showed to all of us how a life is complete by extending love to all and comforting all at the time of need.
We all will be missing her beautiful smile and warmth.
We pray for her good soul to rest in peace

Our beloved Amma has been an integral and essential part of our lives for as long as we can remember. She lived and cared for our family for almost twenty years after she moved to the USA and for many more years before then. She was an exceptional person, kind, generous and very spiritual. She was devoted to her family and looked after her children and grand children with loving kindness. Her generosity knew no bounds and she helped all those in need from her relatives and friends to her faithful domestic helpers. Amma kept in touch with her friends and family around the world and was especially loved by all her brothers, nieces, nephews and their kids. Her loving kindness and infectious smile captured the hearts of many.
Amma’s cooking was exceptional. She had an open door and cooked for everyone who would visit - her tasty curries and traditional cuisine were well known. Up until this summer as long as she was able to stand, she helped in making her favorite foods. This was no easy feat as she preferred things done the old fashioned way. In her view no machine could replace the grinding stones of yesteryear.
Amma enjoyed going to church regularly and looked forward to the visits from her Pastor, Reverend Johan Bosman and her CCRC church friends. She read the scriptures daily and her caregivers continued to do so to her when she was ill. Her faith kept her strong and positive even in ill health and she never complained or felt sorry for herself when her heart started to fail. We were privileged to have been able to take care of her during this past year and give back to her some of the loving care she’d shown us and our children. Our friends loved her as their own mother and cared for her by bringing her comfort foods and keeping her company. Her sickness made us weep inside as it was hard to see our beloved mother decline in front of our eyes, but her spirit remained strong until the very end.
Amma you have left a void in our hearts and lives which can never be filled. Thank you for all you’ve done for us, we love you and the memories we carry of you will never fade.
‘We Thank God in Heaven for when He Gave us a Mother He gave us the very Best’.
May your Soul Rest In Peace.
